July lunch
Wednesday 9 July 08, Lunch, Epicure Room at the Dundee Hilton
During the members’ five-minute slot, Shirley Millar, an Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, outlined projects within the local area that are being funded by Macmillan Cancer Support. One of these is a new unit at Ninewells Hospital where a specialist team will deliver the new Mohs microscopic skin surgery service (MMS), recognised globally as the gold-standard treatment in non-melanoma skin cancer. Shirley highlighted that this treatment removes the need for excessive removal of normal healthy tissue with subsequent damage to surrounding structures, or incomplete removal of tumours. It greatly reduces the time spent in hospital and in most cases it also means that patients do not require reconstructive surgery.

Macmillan are also funding a specialist nurse in haematology at Ninewells Hospital and the all-important Macmillan Grants – these can be used for many different purposes by people affected by cancer e.g. to buy new clothes for someone who has lost a drastic amount of weight through their illness but cannot afford to buy new clothes.
Macmillan Cancer Support is Women Ahead’s charity for 2008-09.
